When a sliding door panel is out of alignment, it may close with a gap at the top or bottom, bounce back open, rub against the frame, or refuse to latch. Alignment problems can come from worn rollers, loose screws, settling of the building, or simple wear over years of use.
Sliding door alignment and adjustment brings the panel back to level and square in its frame. We set roller height on both ends, check how the panel meets the jamb, and confirm the latch engages without lifting or forcing the door.
Common symptoms
- A visible wedge-shaped gap along the closing edge
- The door bounces open or will not close fully
- The panel rubs the frame or the fixed panel
- The latch only works if you lift or press the door
- Daylight or drafts around the edges
- The door drifts open or closed on its own
Our repair process
- 1
Measure
We check the panel against the jamb and use a level to see how far it is out.
- 2
Inspect rollers
Rollers must be in good condition for adjustment to hold.
- 3
Adjust height
Each end of the panel is raised or lowered to bring it level and square.
- 4
Secure hardware
Loose screws, stops, and guides are tightened or replaced.
- 5
Fine-tune the latch
The keeper is aligned so the door closes and locks easily.

Benefits
- Even contact with the frame and weatherstripping
- Fewer drafts and less rattling
- Easier, more consistent locking
- Reduced wear on rollers and track
When replacement may be appropriate
Alignment cannot fully correct a badly warped frame or a building opening that has shifted far out of square. If we see that, we explain what further work or replacement may involve.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my sliding door leave a gap when closed?
One end of the panel is usually sitting higher or lower than the other, often because a roller is worn or out of adjustment.
Can I adjust my sliding door myself?
Many doors have adjustment screws near the bottom corners. If adjustment does not hold or the screws do nothing, the rollers are likely worn.
Does alignment help with drafts?
Yes. A level panel presses evenly against the weatherstripping, which reduces air gaps. Worn weatherstripping may also need replacement.
Why does my door bounce back open?
A panel that is not square can hit the jamb at an angle and rebound. Adjusting it level usually solves the issue.
How long does adjustment last?
With healthy rollers and a clean track, a proper adjustment can hold well. Worn parts will cause the door to drift again sooner.
